Eating healthy on the road and in the air

Jun 6, 2006 Dan Florio

The savvy traveler can eat right and maintain healthy diet plans, whether you follow low carb, low fat or vegetarian menus, or even those just counting calories!

Business travelers have to eat. Those of us who spend a significant chunk of our lives on the road could easily end up eating junk food, fast food and quick convenience store sugar and grease. It's just plain hard to follow a healthy diet when juggling travel logistics with work schedules, meetings, phone calls and deadlines.

This series of travel and diet articles is here to help. You can keep to your low carb, low fat, vegetarian and low calorie diets, with just a little planning and creativity.

As articles are added, they will be hightlighted with a link:

Don't forget to exercise too, when on the go. It's easy to use those ubiquitous Hotel Fitness Centers, especially if you check Expedia.com when you plan your travels (you can choose hotels with fitness centers as a parameter in your search).

Do you find it hard to stick to your diet when traveling? Do you have any diet and travel tips to share? Add your two cents to the Traveler's Diet Discussion

I look forward to more travel dining articles, especially Low Fat Travel Dining and Road Trip Snacking. I've found both of these to sometimes be a bit difficult when traveling.

I agree with you Joy. So often it seems like you have to make a choice; "Hmm, should this breakfast be low carb, or should it be low fat?" And let's face it, it's just more FUN to dine out rather than pack your own (albeit more healthful) food!

My kids have been visiting and we've been eating out like crazy, not watching ANYTHING! But I feel like we deserve to enjoy ourselves...it's just a twice a year thing! When they go home, it's back to eating healthy again.

that's true, when one is traveling for fun it's great to just eat like it's 1999! :) I have a cruise coming up, and I know the food is really good on those...and I have to ask myself, do I stay on low carb or not? If I don't, I'd have to accept comong home with more weight to drop later. On cruises, it's inevitable, even if you use the gym and do laps around the decks. :)

Traveling with a "meat & potatoes" husband and two young children makes it difficult to stay on track with my diet while traveling. Having some hints for better choices is helpful. Now, if I could just get them all to join me in my healthful approach...
