Why search for the news yourself? That's just so old school. Let Google do the walking for the news you need when you travel for business.

Use Google News Alerts to keep abreast of important business from the road. You can set the alerts to arrive in your inbox, or you can set up a Google Home Page to view news blurbs.

How to Use Google News Alerts:

  • If you work for a particular company, you can set up alerts about that business. For example, I could set my alerts for Microsoft (if I wanted to be bombarded with news, that is), Flash design, Flex code, Adobe, Apple and Zune.

  • Freelancers could use the power of the net to instantly search for and present information about competing companies, new tools and updates, travel deals, the stock market, or whatever is deemed crucial enough to track.

  • I could even add my personal interests to provide entertaining reading while kicking back in my hotel: hurricanes, global warming, catastrophic weather, Battlestar Galactica, etc.

And you know what's the best part? Setting up the news alerts are a piece of cake! Even my wife can do it (sorry, Jill). Go to Google News Alerts and fill in the super-duper easy four line template.

A word of advice: don't start with too many alert items. These things can really clutter up your inbox. Take some time to experiment and perfect the search terms you really need.
