Items to consider for international travel.

Traveling abroad is both exciting and overwhelming. Lessen travel anxiety by checking these items off of the international packing list.

Air Travel

When traveling by air know the exact baggage allotment the airline allows, for this will set the guidelines for how much that can be packed. Most airlines allow two checked bags and one carry-on-bag. Know the maximum weight allowed for each bag.

  • Check with the airline to learn more about what quantity of liquids (consumable and cosmetic) is allowed on board.
  • The air on long international flights can become quite chilly. Make sure to pack a pair of socks or booties in carry-on-luggage.
  • Noise on long international fights can be a concern for those who wish to sleep. Pack earplugs if noise is a problem when trying to sleep.

Snacks and Food

Food is extremely expensive in airports. If going without food for an extended period of time is a concern, pack high protein snacks. Nuts, cheese, or meat products will satisfy hunger for a longer period of time compared to fruits or vegetables.

Packing Luggage for International Trips

If flying, pack all valuables such as laptop and expensive camera gear in carry-on-luggage. If your luggage is misplaced or lost there's a good chance these items may never turn up again.

Clothing

Bring clothes that are easily converted from casual around town wear to dressier apparel. Classic clothing is the best choice. Pack clothing that is wrinkle free. Clothing that contains polyester and/or spandex is a good choice. Stay away from a hundred percent cotton or linen garments. Cotton and linen garments will wrinkle horribly. Roll garments instead of laying them flat if luggage space is an issue. Rolling your clothing allows for more space in your luggage.

Shoes

Like clothing, pack shoes that can be worn for numerous occasions. Bring shoes that can be dressed up or down. But make sure they're comfortable for extended walking excursions.

Security Issues

The increase of identity theft is on the rise and Americans are advised to be extra cautious carrying identification. American passports fetch a high price on the black market in other countries. Consider buying a body hugging money belt that not only carries money but also holds a passport when traveling between countries.

International Phone

Cell phone networks abroad work differently than in the United States. Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is the type of cell phone and network that is used in many other countries outside of the US. Some cell phone operators, like T-Mobile or Cingular, use GSM technology, but many do not. If uncertain, check with the phone company. Taking a GSM phone abroad can be very expensive.

Traveling abroad requires extended planning. Packing for international travel can be like taking a little bit of home along on the journey, so take the time to pack the needed essentials in order to feel safe and comfortable.
