Travel Tips for the Solo Business TravelerHow to Enjoy Yourself when Traveling Alone for Work
Business travel often means solo travel. Enjoy a gourmet meal or indulge in a spa treatment, or just go sightseeing to make traveling alone more enjoyable.
Business travel can become monotonous over time – the airline delays and cancellations, hotel rooms and convention centers all blend into one, with no worthwhile memories. In addition, when traveling with others, it can be difficult to find time to do activities outside of the itinerary. However, if traveling solo, there are ways to make a business trip more memorable. Take time to engage in a hobby or indulge in something special, such as a spa treatment or gourmet meal, to make the trip more enjoyable. Engage in a Hobby or Event for Enjoyable Business Travel Frequent travelers know that a good way to make a trip more enjoyable is to budget time for fun activities. For those who enjoy sight seeing, talk to the hotel concierge about the local sights and arrange for a walking tour. For music lovers, find out if the local symphony or any other groups are performing during your visit. For travelers who enjoy golf, make arrangements to hit the links while in town (rent clubs at the course rather than including them with luggage). Take time to do something enjoyable, whether squeezed into the itinerary or as an extra day in the area. Solo Travelers Can Indulge in a Gourmet MealA gourmet meal at a fine restaurant can be the highlight of any trip. Make reservations at a local eatery and enjoy the dining experience. Best of all, when dining alone, it's easy to enjoy a leisurely dinner without distraction. Bring a book or magazine if shy about dining out alone, or plan a meal for an off time when fewer patrons are likely to be in the restaurant. Don't Over-Schedule Meetings and Appointments when Traveling SoloBusiness travel can be non-stop – traveling from one destination to the next and an endless schedule of meetings and other appointments. Be sure to allow enough time between meetings for a quick break, and schedule a longer break at some point during the trip. Make arrangements for a morning or afternoon free of meetings, and take time to relax. Whether it's an afternoon outside at a cafe or at the park people watching, or an hour or two at the movies or in front of the television, take some time to recharge by doing nothing. In addition, turn off the cell phone and resist the urge to check e-mail and voice mail messages. Traveling for business can be hectic, especially when traveling with others. Traveling alone, however, brings opportunities to enjoy activities that might not otherwise happen during a business trip. Schedule some solo time during a work trip – and enjoy it.
