» desertblue - Female Travel and Periods

When you are traveling, really the last thing you want to do is spend time hunting and buying your own preferred brands of tampons, pads and painkillers. Not to mention fresh underwear. I prefer the comfort of having my "period underwear" available - loose and not binding in any way, cotton and soft. It's just more comforting having my familiar things around me too. IMO, this makes spending the time to get your menstral kit established time well spent.

I recommend keeping Aleve or generic naproxen sodium in the kit instead of, or in addition to, Advil/Tylenol/etc. Naproxen is a muscle relaxer versus the others which are pain killers, so it eases cramps better. If you're diabetic, stick with Tylenol or whatever is recommended by your doctor, but for anyone else, I'd recommend the naproxen/Aleve. I have PCOS and it's the only thing I've found that works 100% of the time, especially when I'm on the road.

That's good info Michelle. I also found this link on Women's Travel Health.

On another note, I've read about stopping having periods altogether and I will say that sounds mighty appealing. Then this whole kit could just be trashed, huh?

No, this is a new thing. It's all over the news and involves using the pill according to how your doctor suggests for this purpose. Check out noperiod.com. My periods seem to be getting worse over the years (more cramps, more moods) so I am considering it. Even though we have no need of birth control pills.

Actually my doctor told me that it's ok to occasionally skip the placebo week on my monthly birth control pill pack and I simply won't get my period until I hit the next placebo week. I've done that occasionally when I haven't wanted to be bothered with it during a travel week. Of course, you might want to check with your doctor before doing it, as each body is different...but it is an alternative.
