This is good information. People always clump up and make everything move so sloooowly; it's like mass confusion at security checkpoints. At least I know these days to have my ID and laptop out and ready. I also always wear slip on shoes too.

What I don't like so much is reassembling all my goods neatly again. But that's because I overpack my carry ons.

Having my stuff around me is like having a security blanket. I don't even like putting things in the overhead bins - i want everything right in front of me. I think it's time to look into a blackberry - laptops are so big and fragile...and expensive...and stealable...

There is also real potential for the downside of checking your luggage, as I recently discovered.

The whole ordeal getting through security anymore makes me nuts! I know they need to be careful, but I'm not sure they catch much more with the current system. I know someone who had her cardboard nail file confiscated, and then they arrived at their destination and discovered the husband had a pocket knife he didn't realize was in his bag.. and that they missed.

Plus, it is NUTS going through all this stuff with impatient little ones!!! Meltdowns inevitably ensue. (And that's just ME).

As someone who flies a lot, I can also tell you that flying on a one-way ticket makes it extremely likely you'll be hand-checked, even if you make it through the security checkpoint without setting off the alarm. If you ever see SSSS on you boarding pass, you get the "special" line. So if you're flying on a one-way ticket, give yourself an extra half-hour to get through security because there's a good chance you'll get frisked and searched.
